Why Implement Wireless

Page history last edited by Jonathan 1 yr ago

Reasons for implementing wireless vary depending upon the type of library. For instance, new building projects often include wireless technology. Or, in a college setting, the library may be part of a larger network implementing wireless, with the expectation that the library will circulate wireless laptops.

Commons reasons to implement wireless include:

More demand for the Internet than can be met with the wired network.

Patron requests.

Inability to wire for more public Internet stations in older buildings.

Staff wireless so they may roam throughout library and help patrons while carrying a PDA with access to the catalog.

Ability to extend the library services to a new patrons.

Common reasons patrons like using wireless networks:

No need sign up for an Internet terminal, and no Internet time limits set by Internet timing software.

hey can bring in their own laptops.

Brings a sense of security. With own laptop, patron can perform tasks such as online banking without worrying that personal information is stored on a public Internet station.

It is comfortable. The patron can sit anywhere in the library to access the network.

It’s free – most cafes charge by the hour.

The library is quiet.

The network is fast.

They can work on any document on their laptops and are not limited to the programs which might be blocked on a library computer.
