Planning a Wireless Network

In addition to the considerations listed above, the location of the access points needs to be determined. Access points should be located high so that the signal can radiate. Some common places include placing them high on a wall, well above the book shelves, or, if a false ceiling is used, it can be places near the panels.

Metal can be a deterrent to the signal. For instance if the access point is located above a ceiling panel, it should not be near a metal beam. Similarly, metal bookshelves, or glass with metal wires (such a safety glass) will block or degrade signal. Thick concrete might pose a barrier to coverage as well as limit the placement of the access points.

Access points can be purchased that provide power over Ethernet. With this, a library will only need to provide an Ethernet connection. No electrical plug is needed.

Access points provide a 360 degree radius of coverage. Because of this, they should be mounted near the middle of a room rather than on an outside wall. Mounting on an outside wall will provide coverage outside the building as well as inside the building. Moving it to the center of the room will cover a larger radius inside the building.

Similarly, if the library has multiple floors, coverage will spread between floors.

A walk-through should be performed throughout the library. A simple way to perform a walk-though is this: Purchase an access point. Mount it to a long pole. With a floor plan and a wireless laptop in hand, begin walking through the library. Prop the access point in a location near the center of the room, near a structure where the access point might be located on a wall. Walk throughout the library and note on the floor plan if the signal is excellent, good or poor. Continue this process, drawing out circles of coverage on the floor plan.

When a patron moves between access points, the laptop will detect the new signal and simply move over to the new coverage. The patron will not detect a break in the connection.
